When Irish Eyes are Smiling
a Tribute to PopPop, a Jacquard Woven
After designing in Photoshop, I worked in NedGraphics to color-fix and assign weaves to colors. After trial and error, I began to weave on the TC-2 loom in 10/2 perle cotton.
When Irish Eyes are Smiling is a tribute to my late grandfather, Tom Duffy II. During my last visit with him, I remember reading the Irish blessing that hung on the wall:
May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
May the rains fall soft upon your fields,
and until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
I remembered all the happy times we had and especially of our last trip to Ireland. I wanted something to embody the happy feeling of his memory, so I created this piece.
This was my ideation page. I wanted the background to include the poem, and I wanted to use an image of my Poppop in Ireland, with a photoshopped background of the Cliffs of Moher.
